7 June 2021

Dear County Secretary,

Somerset Schools’ AA will be holding SSAA Competitions at The Bill Whistlecroft Athletics Arena, Yeovil, on Saturday 12 June (Intermediates and Seniors) and on Saturday 19 June (Juniors).

This email concerns only the 12 June Competition (Intermediates and Seniors) track events and applies only if your county will not be staging a meeting on that day.

The Somerset entries close at midnight tonight but it is already clear that there will be a number of unoccupied lanes (usually 2 or 3) in almost every track event. (The IG 200m and IB 800m do not have any vacant lanes.)

Therefore, we would like to invite your ‘elite’ track athletes to submit entry forms as the increased level of competition would obviously benefit all those athletes striving to attain a top-16 place on Power of 10 and (following a county nomination) a possible ESAA invitation to compete at the New Balance ESAA Championships in Manchester.

Please note the following points:

  1. This email is being sent out at 2.00pm to ensure that all 6 counties receive the information at the same time. This will allow you to consider which of your potential Manchester track event nominees should receive an invitation to compete in Yeovil and to pass on this email this evening.

  2. Somerset entries close at midnight tonight so no guest entries will be accepted before that time.

  3. Guest entries will be accepted during a 48-hour period – Tuesday and Wednesday – and will not be considered after midnight on Wednesday.

  4. Entries will be accepted on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

  5. Counties are limited to a maximum of 2 entries per event. This is not an Open Meeting so it will not be acceptable for a coach or a club to ‘flood’ an event with multiple entries.

  6. Guest athletes may enter 1 event only – the event in which they are trying to secure a county nomination for the New Balance ESAA Championships.

  7. Entries should certainly be above County Standard (suitable for consideration for ESAA nomination – possibly in the top-30 on Power of 10 at the moment).

  8. It would be unfair on our field officials if we accepted any field event athletes from outside Somerset but additional track entries should cause no significant extra work on the part of our track officials.

  9. The track timetable appears on the website but please check it on Friday.

  10. Photo-finish and fully electronic timing will be in operation.

  11. Entry (including the payment of the £3.00 entry fee) will be via the Somerset Schools’ AA website – somersetschoolsathletics.org.uk – Latest Updates Entry for County Competitions. Please include the town and county in which the school is located.

  12. There will be a maximum of 8 athletes in each event and entry fees will be refunded for those entries which arrive after the event has been filled.

We feel sure our friends and neighbours will appreciate this offer and the good will with which it has been made. If the system works well for the 12 June Competition we would certainly hope to be able to extend a similar courtesy for the Junior age groups on 19 June.

Sincerely,

Brian Baker & Richard Bowden.
